Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Nigeria is the largest University in Sub Saharan Africa with a land mass of about 2844 Hectares of land.

The university recently benefitted from the ESRI 100 African Universities Technology Grant through the regional distributor for Africa and has since put it to optimal usage by students, researchers and also for administrative purposes in the University.

In its modest quest to impart knowledge to all races, A.B.U Zaria has deployed the ArcGIS software suite across the campus and is made to use by students, staff and researchers from various departments as the Geography, Geology, Geomatics, Urban and Regional Planning, Center for Disaster risk management, Community Medicine Department, Biological Sciences Department, Engineering, Spatial Information Sciences Center, and many other users of the Software Suite for various aspects of applications.

Further to this, a significant achievement is the creation of the Ahmadu Bello University Geographical Information System (ABUGIS) which is a unit of the Vice Chancellor’s office and has optimally used the software to develop a comprehensive system for administrative use in Planning, Management and for Decision Making. It is also being used for monitoring and evaluation.

This has paved way for the University to champion the pace of the National Geospatial Data infrastructure policy (NGDI) as the Pioneer institution to adopt the GIS technology and develop such a system using the ArcGIS software through ESRI & SAMBUS Geospatial Ltd.

SGL in its CSR has organised a 3 day Orientation for the Coordinator and User License Administrator of the University on the deployment of the ArcGIS Software suite and also various application for optimal utilization of the grant with goal of achieving the target of the 100 African Universities Technology Grant by ESRI.
