Arcgis Pro a new application for Desktop

ArcGIS Pro is available in three versions that correspond to the ArcGIS for Desktop license levels: Basic, Standard, and Advanced. More functionality is included as we move from Basic to Standard to Advanced.

ArcGIS Pro is a new application that’s part of ArcGIS for Desktop. You can use it to create informative maps and visualizations quickly. ArcGIS Pro includes scientific tools for answering tough questions via spatial analysis, such as “How are these places related?” or “How can I predict what might happen here during a major storm?”

Using ArcGIS Pro, you can create and publish both 2D and 3D content to look at problems from all angles (literally!). You can also make what you create in ArcGIS Pro available to others using ArcGIS Online or your own server portal.

ArcGIS Pro is a 64-bit, multithreaded application that runs on Windows. It’s fast, incredibly powerful, and has a beautiful user interface.

ArcGIS Pro system requirements

Get started with ArcGIS Pro

Whether you’ve spent the last decade working in ArcGIS for Desktop, or you are just beginning to understand and apply GIS, ArcGIS Pro is new to you. This guide helps you get up and running quickly.

Install and set up

Most of you will download ArcGIS Pro from My Esri, run the installation program, sign in, and be running with ArcGIS Pro in less than 10 minutes. However, if your experience isn’t quite as smooth, these resources should help you.

  • A license must be assigned to your account before you can successfully sign in to ArcGIS Pro. These steps must be taken by your organization’s administrator before you can use ArcGIS Pro.
  • Review the system requirements and learn how to install and sign in.
  • After you start ArcGIS Pro, you can review your license settings.
  • For the future, you may also want to know how ArcGIS Pro software can be updated.

Begin with a tutorial

The best way to get oriented with ArcGIS Pro is to start using it. Follow these tutorials to get started quickly.

  • If you’ve worked in ArcGIS for Desktop before, you’ll want to migrate content.
  • Move around your map by navigating your data using the mouse, keyboard shortcuts, and by linking different views of the map together.
  • Start fine-tuning the appearance of your points, lines, and other features in the symbolize your data tutorial.
  • Other tutorials help you learn to find and run a geoprocessing tool to automate work and analyze data, edit your data, add maps to a layout, and customize the display of labels in your map.

You can also learn how to map and analyze data in 2D and 3D through a real-world scenario that uses ArcGIS Pro to study tides in Venice, Italy.

Migration guide for existing ArcGIS users

You’ve opened ArcGIS Pro and you’re lost. You want to know how you can work with ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcGIS Pro? Use these topics as your compass.

  • The Migration overview highlights how you create projects, connect to data, import maps, use tools, run models or scripts, edit data, and share it.
  • Use the ArcGIS Pro terminology and user interface reference to learn about new terms and functionality, and compare them to similar concepts in ArcGIS for Desktop.
  • Migrate your content is a tutorial that takes your existing GIS work from ArcGIS for Desktop into projects.
  • Python 3 migration details how the move to Python 3 affects your scripts. All arcpy.mapping scripts must be updated for use with ArcGIS Pro.
